Offering Hope: International Overdose Awareness Day

August 31: A Day of Remembrance and Action

Each year on August 31, communities across the world pause to reflect, remember, and raise awareness for International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), the largest global campaign to end overdose, reduce stigma, and acknowledge the grief of families and friends left behind.

In Prescott and throughout Arizona, the overdose crisis continues to impact thousands of lives. At Compass Recovery Centers, we recognize this day not only as a time of remembrance but also as a call to action, a chance to affirm life, healing, and the power of recovery.

The Reality of Overdose in Arizona

Overdose doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and communities, including our own. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services:

  • More than 3,000 Arizonans died from a drug overdose in 2023
  • Opioids remain the leading cause, but fentanyl, benzodiazepines, and polysubstance use are increasingly contributing factors
  • Yavapai County continues to see overdose death rates above the national average

Behind these numbers are real people—sons, daughters, parents, friends. Every life lost is one too many.

Removing the Stigma

An overdose is not a moral failure. It is a public health issue, often tied to trauma, mental illness, chronic pain, and untreated addiction. One of the most powerful aspects of IOAD is its focus on breaking down stigma.

When families feel safe to speak about their loss, and individuals feel safe to ask for help, real change becomes possible.

How Compass Recovery Centers Supports Change

At Compass Recovery Centers, we meet people where they are, with compassion, dignity, and evidence-based care. Located in Prescott, we serve individuals throughout Arizona who are ready to take the first step away from addiction and toward recovery.

Our programs include:

  • Medical detox
  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
  • Outpatient care
  • Treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Family and trauma-informed therapy
  • Grief counseling and relapse prevention

For those who’ve lost someone, we offer a safe space to process that pain. And for those who are still struggling, we offer tools, support, and structure to find a new way forward.

What You Can Do This August 31

Whether or not you’ve been directly affected by an overdose, your voice matters. Here are a few ways to observe International Overdose Awareness Day:

  • Wear purple or silver to show support
  • Attend a local vigil (check with Prescott-area organizations like MATFORCE or county health departments)
  • Reach out to someone in recovery
  • Share your story—or listen to someone else’s
  • Learn how to use Naloxone (Narcan), the life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug
  • Light a candle in remembrance of someone lost

If you’re struggling, or know someone who is, you don’t have to wait for a special day to get help.

Hope Lives Here

Grief is heavy. Healing is possible. At Compass Recovery Centers, we believe in the strength of individuals, families, and communities to recover, working together.

This August 31, let’s honor every life lost to overdose by committing to compassion, action, and a future where fewer families suffer this pain.
