In this post, we’ll discuss gambling addiction recovery and some healthy activities you can try instead.
1. Start a New Hobby
What did you enjoy doing when you were a kid? Did you like to paint, write, or work with your hands?
Now is the perfect time to rediscover those healthy hobbies you had when you were younger.
2. Start a New Project
Have you had items on your to-do list for a while? Maybe it’s finishing (or starting) a household project.
Is it time to clean out the garage? Finish remodeling the basement or the bathroom? Plant that herb and vegetable garden out back?
Carpe diem. Your new project is exactly what you need to help your mind stay focused on positive things.
3. Stay Active
We mean this in a literal sense. Sign up for a membership at a local gym, and make a few friends there.
Are you more of a team player? Why not sign up for a community softball league or jogging club?
You could also set some long-term fitness goals, like training for that upcoming 5k or losing those stubborn 10 pounds.
4. Sign up for a Course
Is there a subject you’ve always wanted to study? If you have too much free time on your hands, see if you can find a course that matches your interest.
Maybe the local community college or library offers a class on the subject. You could also invest in an online course–as long as you’re sure you won’t be tempted to resume gambling online.
5. Practice Self-Care
You’re likely going through a lot of emotional upheavals during your recovery. That’s why it’s especially important to find ways to recenter yourself.
Find something that helps you to relax, unwind, and feel more balanced. This could be taking a walk, practicing yoga, writing in a journal, or getting a massage.
There’s no right or wrong answer–as long as you’re finding a way to channel more positive energy.
6. Spend Time in Nature
In today’s tech-crazy world, this is something all of us need.
Reconnect with nature by going for a hike or strolling along the seashore. Plan a camping trip with your family and friends or take a vacation to the beach.
Stuck in the city? Maybe you could visit the zoo, volunteer at the local animal shelter, or bicycle through the city park.
